Jellyfin is a Free Software Media System that puts you in control of managing and streaming your media. It is an alternative to the proprietary Emby and Plex, to provide media from a dedicated server to end-user devices via multiple apps. Jellyfin is descended from Emby's 3.5.2 release and ported to the .NET Core framework to enable full cross-platform support. There are no strings attached, no premium licenses or features, and no hidden agendas: just a team who want to build something better and work together to achieve it.

Hardware Acceleration Enhancements

Hardware Acceleration
Many desktop applications need access to a GPU to function properly and even some Desktop Environments have compositor effects that will not function without a GPU. However this is not a hard requirement and all base images will function without a video device mounted into the container.Intel/ATI/AMD
To leverage hardware acceleration you will need to mount /dev/dri video device inside of the container.--device=/dev/dri:/dev/driWe will automatically ensure the abc user inside of the container has the proper permissions to access this device.
Nvidia
Hardware acceleration users for Nvidia will need to install the container runtime provided by Nvidia on their host, instructions can be found here: https://github.com/NVIDIA/nvidia-container-toolkitWe automatically add the necessary environment variable that will utilise all the features available on a GPU on the host. Once nvidia-container-toolkit is installed on your host you will need to re/create the docker container with the nvidia container runtime
--runtime=nvidia and add an environment variable -e NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=all (can also be set to a specific gpu's UUID, this can be discovered by running nvidia-smi --query-gpu=gpu_name,gpu_uuid --format=csv ). NVIDIA automatically mounts the GPU and drivers from your host into the container.Arm Devices
Best effort is made to install tools to allow mounting in /dev/dri on Arm devices. In most cases if /dev/dri exists on the host it should just work. If running a Raspberry Pi 4 be sure to enabledtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d in your usercfg.txt.Usage

Environment variables from files (Docker secrets)
You can set any environment variable from a file by using a special prependFILE__.As an example:

For all of our images we provide the ability to override the default umask settings for services started within the containers using the optional-e UMASK=022 setting.
Keep in mind umask is not chmod it subtracts from permissions based on it's value it does not add. Please read up here before asking for support.Optional Parameters
The official documentation for ports has additional ports that can provide auto discovery.Service Discovery (
1900/udp) - Since client auto-discover would break if this option were configurable, you cannot change this in the settings at this time. DLNA also uses this port and is required to be in the local subnet.Client Discovery (
7359/udp) - Allows clients to discover Jellyfin on the local network. A broadcast message to this port with "Who is Jellyfin Server?" will get a JSON response that includes the server address, ID, and name.-p 7359:7359/udp \

User / Group Identifiers
When using volumes (-v flags), permissions issues can arise between the host OS and the container, we avoid this issue by allowing you to specify the user PUID and group PGID.Ensure any volume directories on the host are owned by the same user you specify and any permissions issues will vanish like magic.

Most of our images are static, versioned, and require an image update and container recreation to update the app inside. With some exceptions (noted in the relevant readme.md), we do not recommend or support updating apps inside the container. Serve Jellyfin on your own domain behind Caddy, Nginx or Traefik. Fill in your domain and copy the result. It's a starting point, some apps need their own base URL or extra headers set too.

Nine times out of ten the logs tell you exactly what went wrong.
- In Portainer, go to Containers, click the container, then Logs. Or run
docker logs Jellyfin - Exit codes help too:
137means killed, usually out of memory.126or127means the command inside the image is broken.
Port already in use
If deployment fails with "Bind for 0.0.0.0:8096 failed: port is already allocated", something else on your server is using that port.
- Find what's using it:
sudo ss -tlnp | grep :8096 - Stop the other service, or pick a different host port. In
8096:8096only the left number is yours to change, the right one belongs to the app.
Running but the page won't load
The container is up but nothing appears in your browser.
- Use your server's real IP:
http://your-server-ip:8096. The 0.0.0.0 link Portainer shows isn't a real address. - Give it a minute after first deploy, Jellyfin can take a while to initialise.
- Make sure your firewall allows the port, e.g.
sudo ufw allow 8096
Permission denied on volumes
If the logs show "permission denied", the app can't write to its data folder on the host.
- Fix the ownership:
sudo chown -R 1000:1000 /srv/lsio/jellyfin/config(and the same for the other mapped folders) - Or set the
PUIDandPGIDvariables (defaults 1000:1000) to match your own user, found withid $USER
Image won't pull
Test the pull directly on the host: docker pull linuxserver/jellyfin:latest
- "manifest unknown" means the tag no longer exists. This template uses
latest, so try pinning a specific version instead. - "toomanyrequests" is the Docker Hub rate limit. Log in with
docker loginto raise it. - "no space left on device" means a full disk. Reclaim space with
docker system prune
"exec format error"
This means the image was built for a different CPU architecture than your server.
- This image supports:
amd64, arm64 - Check yours with
uname -m: x86_64 is amd64, aarch64 is arm64. Raspberry Pi and other ARM boards are the usual culprits.
Container keeps restarting
The unless-stopped restart policy relaunches the app after every crash, so the real error can scroll past.
- Check the logs right after a restart, the last few lines before it died are the useful ones.
- Get the exit code with
docker inspect Jellyfin --format '{{.State.ExitCode}}' - Still stuck? Redeploy once with the restart policy set to
noso the failure stays visible.

A single container
Jellyfin runs as one container, the simplest kind of app here. Just the one image to pull and nothing else wired up alongside it.
The app image
An image is the app packed up ready to go, everything Jellyfin needs bundled into one download. This template pulls linuxserver/jellyfin:latest, which Docker fetches once (about 331 MB) and then starts your own copy from.
Where the image comes from
Docker pulls its images from registries, public libraries of ready-built apps. Jellyfin's comes from Docker Hub, published by linuxserver.
Version tags
The bit after the colon in the image name is the version tag. Here it's latest, which always points at the newest build, so a redeploy can bump you to a newer release without you asking. Newest right now is 10.11.11. Pin a specific tag if you would rather stay on one version.
Which machines it runs on
Every image is built for particular CPU types. This one ships for amd64, arm64, so it runs on both regular x86 servers and ARM boards like a Raspberry Pi.
Ports
A port is the door the app answers on. A mapping like 8096:8096 means it's reachable on port 8096 of your server, where the left number is yours to change and the right one belongs to the app. Once it's running, open http://your-server-ip:8096 in a browser. It opens:

Volumes
A volume is where Jellyfin keeps its files so they survive an update or a restart. Without one, anything it saves would sit inside the container and vanish the moment it's recreated. This template mounts:

Environment variables
Environment variables are the settings you hand over when you deploy, things like a password or a timezone. Jellyfin takes 4 of them, all with defaults you can leave alone or tweak:
PUID, defaults to1000. Run 'id [USER]' for the owner of the host volume directories to get the UID to use here.PGID, defaults to1000. Run 'id [USER]' for the owner of the host volume directories to get the GID to use here.TZ, defaults toEtc/UTC. Restart policy
The restart policy here is unless-stopped, so Docker restarts Jellyfin after a crash or reboot, but leaves it off when you stop it on purpose. You can change this on the deploy screen. The choices are no (never restart), on-failure (only after a crash), unless-stopped (restart unless you stop it), and always (bring it back no matter what).
Users and permissions
The PUID and PGID settings tell it which user and group to act as on your host. Point them at your own account (find yours with id $USER) so the files it writes into your mounted folders come out owned by you rather than root.
Networking
Nothing custom is set, so Jellyfin sits on Docker's default bridge network: its own private space that reaches the outside world only through the ports it publishes.
Container name
Once it's deployed, Portainer names the container Jellyfin. That's what you'll spot in the containers list and use in commands like docker logs Jellyfin.
Platform
The platform is linux, the kind of system the container is built to run on. Docker and Portainer handle this on a normal Linux server.
Open source license
Jellyfin is open source, released under the GPL-2.0 license. In plain terms the code is out in the open, so you're free to run it and change it to fit what you need.
